Jennifer, (not her real name) from Tustin, was a great student and loved school. She got to be with her friends, laugh, run, and play. School was a safe space for her to grow and learn. Now because of the COVID pandemic she is struggling. Her grades are slipping, she doesn’t see her friends as much, and the thing she loved more than anything, soccer at recess has gone.
Kid's not having access to sport and play is a travesty and it is taking its toll on a generation. Children are taking a mental and physical step backwards because of disconnection and lack structured activity.
Nelson Mandela once said, "Sport has the power to change the world. It has the power to inspire. It has the power to unite people in a way that little else does. It speaks to youth in a language they understand. Sport can create hope where once there was only despair. It is more powerful than government in breaking down racial barriers."
This quote was centered on racial inequalities in South Africa. It is as relevant today regarding issue’s children face around mental health, social and emotional wellbeing, and physical fitness because of the current lack of play-equity.
